Vestiaires au fil du temps
Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a Canadian physical education teacher at Springfield college in Massachusetts (USA). He was looking for a way of occupying his students during the winter, when it was difficult to play sports outside.
Naismith was also looking for an activity that involved limited physical contact with the aim of reducing the risk of injury. One day, he took the idea of the ancient Maya ballgame and placed two fishing crates on the ramps of the gymnasium. The objective was to get the ball to fall into the wooden crates to score a goal.
Since the crates were high up, the game called for dexterity as well as sheer strength. The first ever basketball match took place on 21 December 1891 and that same year it was adapted to be played by women.
